Guild of Motoring Artists

Art Direction / Editorial Design / Publication Production / Brand Identity

As a member of the Guild of Motoring Artists, I have a particular connection with the organisation and its work.

My role as Art Editor of Redline is to take the content assembled by the magazine's editor and transform it into a professionally designed quarterly publication.

I redesigned Redline from its original newsletter-style presentation into a magazine format, establishing a consistent visual identity while allowing each edition to have its own character.

Alongside this work, I also redeveloped the Guild's logo to create a stronger identity that could serve as a recognised mark of quality for its artist members.

01 / THE CHALLENGE

Giving the artwork the presentation it deserves.

The Guild represents artists working across a remarkable range of styles and techniques, from traditional painting and illustration to printmaking and other media.

Its publication needed to reflect that creativity and quality.

The challenge was to move beyond the appearance of a conventional members' newsletter and establish a stronger editorial identity — one that could bring together articles, artwork, photography and Guild news in a consistent, engaging publication.

Just as importantly, the design needed to be flexible enough to accommodate different types of content from one edition to the next.

02 / THE APPROACH

Bringing editorial thinking to the page.

Working with the magazine's editor, who gathers the material and determines the running order, my responsibility is to give each edition its visual character.

This involves establishing the typography, page layouts, image treatments and visual hierarchy that bring together articles, artist features, photography and Guild news.

The design needs to be consistent enough to give Redline a recognisable identity, while remaining flexible enough to accommodate the different subjects, artwork and contributions featured in each quarterly issue.

Particular attention is given to the presentation of members' artwork, ensuring the images are given the space and prominence they deserve.

03 / THE DESIGN WORK

A magazine with its own identity

Redline was given a more distinctive editorial presentation, using consistent typography, page layouts and graphic treatments to bring the publication together.

The design balances the different demands of articles, artist features, photography and Guild news while giving each edition its own visual interest.

Showcasing the artists

One of the great strengths of the Guild is the diversity of its members' work.

The magazine provides an opportunity to celebrate that work through carefully considered image layouts, feature openings and editorial spreads.

Rather than treating the artwork as an illustration to the text, the design allows it to become an important part of the story.

Developing the Guild's identity

Alongside the publication work, I redeveloped the Guild of Motoring Artists logo to create an identity that better reflects the quality of its membership.

The aim was to establish a recognisable mark that could serve not only as the organisation's identity but also as a visual endorsement of its artist members.

This gave the Guild a stronger and more consistent identity across its communications.

04 / THE OUTCOME

A publication with the confidence of a magazine.

The redesign gave Redline a more cohesive and professional editorial presentation, with a format that can accommodate the changing mix of articles and artwork in each quarterly edition.

Together with the updated Guild identity, the work demonstrates how thoughtful branding and publication design can help an organisation present itself with greater consistency and confidence.

It's also a project I particularly enjoy, combining my professional background in graphic design with my own enthusiasm for motoring art.
